Summer Reading

When I told my son David that I had 11 books on my summer reading list, he said "Dad, it's already the middle of June.  When are you going to read all those books?"  As usual, my goals are higher than what I will most likely accomplish.  Realistically, I think that I will be able to get through the first half of my list by Labor Day.

One of my favorite summer activities is reading.  Maybe it's the longer days and daylight.  Or perhaps it's the extra time to read while on vacation. Here's my listed in their order of priority.  Let me know what you plan to read!

  1. "Strategic Discipleship" by Aubrey Malphurs
  2. "Faith Undone" by Roger Oakland.  This is a fantastic book on the danger of Emergent Church trends.
  3. "Preaching With Freshness" by Bruce Mawhinney.  I first read this years ago.  Mawhinney creates a fiction character who regains his love for the ministry and for preaching.
  4. "Christian Jihad" by Ergun and Emir Canner.  Ergun is the Dean of Liberty University and explains the history behind Muslim hatred of Christians.  Both men were devout Muslims.
  5. "Common Sense" by Glenn Beck. Short book on politics and the new term to describe American liberalism:  "Progisivism."  Beck includes the original Common Sense by Thomas Paine, which was a major factor uniting the 13 Colonies in their passion for freedom.
  6. "The Truth War" by John MacArthur.  If you're going to read only one book on the Emergent Church, read Oaklands.  If you're going to read two, read MacArthur's next.
  7. "Truman" by David McCullough.  I am a HUGE fan of McCullough.  This biography elevates Truman, one of our most underappreciated Presidents. Truman was extremely important in the recognition of Israel's Statehood in 1948.  This 900 pager is not for the faint of heart!
  8. "Loving the Church, Blessing the Nations," by George Miley.  Recommended to me by an ABWE missionary.
  9. "The Evolution of a Creationist" by Jobe Martin.  This is a self published book I picked up at the Pre-Trib conference.
  10. "Breaking the Missional Code" by Stezer and Putman.  Also highly recommended.  I'll let you know what I discover.
  11. "Beyond Opinion" by Ravi Zacharias.  This would be higher on my list, but it's pretty heavy and will slow me down. If I don't get to this over the summer, it will be my Fall reading.

OK.  Now I've got to go read a book!
